FAQs

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. Everyone needs help now and then. You probably already have some strengths that you’ve used before, that for whatever reason are not working right now. Maybe you do not recognize your strengths during this time. Perhaps this problem feels so overwhelming that it is making it difficult to access your inner strengths and skills. In our work together, I’ll help you identify what those strengths are and how to apply them to your current life situation.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

Hopefully, your friends and family are great listeners and may even give you great advice. As an educated and licensed mental health professional, I will do more than listen and give you advice. We will work together on a journey where you will learn new skills to improve the quality of your life. I will listen to you without judgment and with open-hearted kindness. Our time together is completely confidential. You won’t need to worry that I will share what we discuss with other people or treat you differently because of what you say. As we walk down a path together, you will learn to find peace, serenity, and strength in your life.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication alone cannot solve all issues. Medication can treat the symptoms you experience and hopefully provide you with some relief. Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy. With our work together, we will discuss your current situation, identify the stressors and triggers, and teach you the skills you need to feel the peace and serenity that you desire.

What happens during the first few counseling sessions?

I like to take the first few sessions slow so that we have time to get to know each other. We will discuss in more detail what has brought you into counseling, your symptoms, and your history. We will also work together to identify your goals to work towards during the therapy process.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs

How long do counseling sessions typically last?

The length of a counseling session can vary from 45 minutes to 60 minutes per therapy session. We will discuss the length of your session during your initial telephone consult and will continue to monitor as we move through therapy.
